Sedition Acts Silenced criticizing the government. violated the first amendment of our constitution.
Embargo Act encouraged by Jefferson, this act forbade (did not allow) American ships from trading with any another countries. This made northern manufacturures suffer, becuase they could not export their goods.
Whiskey Rebellion In the first test of the new government, George Washington sent 15,000 militia to stop protesting corn farmers in Pennsylvania. The rebellion was stopped swiftly unlike in Shay's rebellion under the old articles of confederation.
Impressment forcing American sailors to serve on British Ships. This was a major factor leading war hawks (congessmen from south west)to want the war of 1812.
Whiskey Tax This enraged many farmers who grew corn.
Neutrality Proclamation George Washington created this document that said that the United States would not interfere, or would stay neutral in the French Revolution. Britain violated this nuetrality when they impressed american merchants who were trading.
Alexander Hamilton As the US Treasurer and a federalist this man came up with the plan to end the national debt by creatinga national bank to amek laon for new businesses to start. Also he though we should pay off state debts by buying old bonds with new bonds.
War of 1812 This was a two year war with Britain that started because they were seizing American ships and Britain was supplying guns to native americans to fight against us.
National Debt 4 million - 81 million = -77 million the amount of money the United States owes other people. We were in debt as a new country due to the costly revolution.
War Hawks A group of congressmen from the south and west that wanted to go to war with Britain for impressing our ships
Tariff A tax on all imported goods/products, or goods coming into our country. The North supported tariffs, while the south was angry because it made imported goods that they bought more expensive.
The North They liked Hamilton’s tariff (tax on imported good) because they were mostly manufacturers and traders
The South Opposed Hamilton’s tariff because they used the most imported/foreign goods. They also were convinced by Hamilton to move the captal to Washington D.C. too.
The French Revolution At first Americans supported this because France had supported us in our own war, but after the Reign of terror (murdering of thousands) support was split.
Washington’s Farwell He urged Americans to stay neutral in foreign affairs and avoid political parties in this famous speech
Federalists A political party that wanted a strong central/national/federal government
Alien Acts Created by Federalists, these laws were opposed by the Republicans because most of their party was comprised of immigrants.
Madison and Hamilton Both of these men were Federalists, who supported a strong federal government.
Monroe Doctrine Our fifth president created the policy that European countries should leave newly independent Latin American countries alone. He told Europe they should not colonize or intervene in the Western Hemisphere.
Judicial Review Established by the Marbury vs Madison case, says that the Supreme Court can declare laws unconstitutional
Jefferson Thought the farmers should be the base of our econonmy. He also though that the ordinary man should participate in government. Hamilton thought the wealthy, educated should have more say in government.
