| Blue Ridge | a natural land regions of the state in the extreme northwestern corner of the state; named for the Blue Ridge Mountains it encompasses\ |
| capital | seat of government for a state or nation\ |
| cash crop | a crop grown to be sold to ear money\ |
| census | an actual count of the population; the federal census id taken every 10 years\ |
| charter | official permission to operate something, something such as a colony or a corporation\ |
| Coastal Plain | a natural region of the state that stretches from the Coastal Zone to the Sandhills; it is the largest land region\ |
| Coastal Zone | a natural land region of the state stretching from the Atlantic Ocean inland for about 10 miles\ |
| colony | a group of people who settle in another land but who are still under the rule of their native land\ |
| compromise | a way of settling disagreements in which each side gives way a little in its demands\ |
| contract | an official, legally binding written agreement\ |
| culture | the way of life of a group of people; includes their beliefs, social forms, customers, and practices\ |
