Jackson Quiz

When was the Democratic Party founded? Between the 1824 and 1828 presidential elections.
Who did the Democratic Party consist of? Commoners and the poor.
Who did Jackson run against in the Election of 1824? Henry Clay, William Crawford, and John Quincy Adams
Who won the 1824 Election? John Quincy Adams
How did Jackson win the 1828 Election? Lots of support from commoners.
What is the spoils system? Rewarding political supporters with government jobs.
What is a tariff? A tax imposed by the government on goods from other countries.
What state did not support tariffs? South Carolina.
What region did support the tariffs? The Northern States.
2 issues with the Bank of the United States: Supported wealthy eastern depositors at expense of farmers and workers. Bank stood in the way for capitalists in the West.
What was the Supreme Court's stance on the Bank of the United States? Thought that the Bank was constitutional.
What was the Trail of Tears? The removal of the Cherokee Indians from Georgia to Indian Territory.
When did the Trail of Tears occur? 1838-1839
What was the Indian Removal Act of 1830? The act that allowed the president to make treaties in which American Indians traded their land for land in the Great Plains.
What did the Supreme Court say about the Indian Removal Act? Said that Indians had the right to keep their lands.
Who were the Five Civilized Tribes? The Creek, the Cherokee, the Chickasaw, the Choctaw, and the Seminole Indians.
Why were they called the Five Civilized Tribes? They could read and write. They had their own alphabet, newspaper, and constitution. Many were farmers.
