| complaint | a formal notice that a lawsuit is being brought |
| summons | a notice directing someone to appear in court to answer a complaint or charge |
| discovery | the opportunity for lawyers to check facts and gather information |
| settlement | a large case, the amount of money the defendant |
| prosecution | party who starts the legal proceedings against another party |
| crime | an act that breaks the law and causes harm to people or society in general |
| penal code | a state's written criminal laws |
| parole | to grant a prisoner an early release from prison |
| mandatory sentencing | where someone is required to be sentenced without trial |
| arraignment | a hearing where a suspect is charged and pleads guilty or not |
| testimony | the statement a witness makes under oath |
| cross-examine | a question a witness on the other party |
| acquittal | a vote of not guilty |
| hung jury | when jury dose not decide weather guilty or not guilty |
| juvenile | a not yet legal adult |
| juvenile delinquent | a non adult who commits a crime or felony |
| rehabilitate | to correct a persons behavior |
