| Lost Generation | Term coined by Gertrude Stein. Group was disenchanted writers who were alienated by consumerism and materialism. |
| Jazz | Music developed by black Americans. It started in New Orleans and spread to Harlem, NY. |
| Radio Stations | Broadcast news reports, Plays, Dramas, Jazz as well as popular music. |
| Fireside Chats | Radio talks FDR had to discuss his plans with the public to provide information about his New Deal policies during the Great Depression |
| Jazz Singer | First movie that had sound (talkie). |
| Prohibition | 18th Amendment. Made it illegal to consume, produce, sell or transport alcohol. |
| Bootleggers | Men & Women who made & sold illegal whiskey |
| Speakeasies | Illegal bars during prohibition in the 1920's. |
| Flappers | New breed of young women who wore short skirts, visited bars and danced to jazz. Flouted conventional social & sexual norms |
| Harlem Renaissance | A literary & artistic movement celebrating African-American culture |
| Black Nationalism | advocates a racial definition (or redefinition) of black national identity. Emphasized black pride and independence from whites. |
| Universal Negro Improvement Association | Founded by Marcus Garvey in 1914, it called for African Americans to build their own society separate from white society |
| Fundamentalism | Belief that everything in the Bible is literally true |
| Scopes Trial | Trial in 1925 in Tennessee in which a teacher went on trial for teaching evolution (John Scopes) |
