| alexander the great | brilliant military leader, never lost a battle called this because in 9 years he won control oof the largest empire of his time |
| monarchy | a single ruler |
| democracy | every citizen is allowed to vote |
| golden age | a time of prosperity, a strong civic life, developments in philosophy, drama, music, sports, geometry, and architectural achievements |
| assembly | lawmaking body of government Athens was one of the first to have citizens vote |
| polis | greek city state that shared a language and letters but were independent to each other |
| oligarchy | ruled by a small group of the richest most powerful citizens |
| tyranny | a single ruler who has taken over the power of others to thanks to support the poorer people |
| philosophy | the search for wisdom and the right way to live |
| peninsula | area of land nearly surrounded by water |
| jury | a group of citizens who hear the evidence in a court of law |
| hellinism | blend of greek ideas with the traditions of Africa and asia of different times |
| agora | an open area used for trade (a market) and town meetings |
