The Great Depression

| Surplus | an excessive amount of goods |
| Franklin Roosevelt (FDR) | The president at the end of the Great Depression |
| Herbert Hoover | The president at the beginning of the Great Depression |
| Dust Bowl | area of the U.S. in or surrounded by dust |
| Great Depression | A time when the economy failed |
| Buying on margin | a way to help buy stock easier |
| Credit | a way to help buy everyday goods |
| Speculation | buying stock without knowing anything about it |
| Boll Weevil | A beetle that destroyed cotton |
| Subsistence Farming | Farming just enough food to substane your family |
| Run on the Banks | The people wanted to get their money back so they went to the banks and started the Run on the Banks |
| Bread lines | Lines that people waited in to get bread |
| Shantees | cardboard huts people lived in at the hoovervilles |
| Hoovervilles | towns named after President Hoover where the poor lived |
