How did cooperation with the pope help kings like Charlemagne and the early Holy Roman Emperors? With this approval, the emperors could call on the pope for help when in bad squabbles.
Why did Pope Leo IX excommunicate the bishop of Constantinople? Wasn't recognizing the pope's authority.
With whom did Pope Gregory VII clash? Emperor Henry IV.
What did Pope Urban II ask Christians to do? Called on Christians from all of Europe to retake the Holy Land from the Muslim Turks.
In which Crusade did Saladin and King Richard I fight? The Third Crusade.
What new products were introduced to Europe after the Crusades? Products such as apricots, rice, and cotton cloth.
What are church officials called. Clergy.
Why did people go on pilgrimages? People wanted to see important religious sights.
What new monastery founded in France in the 900s served as an example to people around Europe? The monastery of Cluny.
How were friars different than monks? Friars lived and worked in the general public. Monks lived and worked in their monasteries.
How did Thomas Aquinas think reason and faith could work together? Argued that rational thought could be used to support Christian beliefs.
What new style of religious architecture developed in Europe in the 1100s? Gothic architecture.
What document did English nobles hope would limit the king's power? The Magna Carta.
Who rallied the French troops during the Hundred Years' War? Joan of Arc.
What was the Black Death? A plague that swept through Europe in between 1347 and 1351.
How did the Black Death contribute to the decline of the manor system? Not enough workers because of the plague.
What is heresy? Religious ideas that oppose accepted church teachings.
Who did the Spanish Christians try to drive out of their lands? The Moors.
What was the purpose of the Spanish Inquisition? To make Spain into an all Christian country.
