| 5. margin call | demand by a broker that investors pay back loans made for stocks purchased on margin |
| 6. bank run | persistent and heavy demands by a bank's depositors, creditors, or customers to withdraw money |
| 7. installment | regular periodic payment made to pay off th cost of an item when buying it on credit |
| 8. bailiff | minor officer of the courts |
| 9. hobo | a homless and usually penniless wanderer |
| 10. soap opera | a serial drama on television or radio using melodramatic situations |
| 11. public works | projects such as highways, parks, and libraries built with public funds for public use |
| 12. relief | aid in the form of money or supplies for those in need |
| 13. foreclose | to take possession of a property from a mortgagor because of defaults on payments |
| 14. polio | abbreviated term for poliomyelitis, an acute infectious disease affecting the skeletal muscles, often resulting in the permanent disability and deformity |
| 15. gold standard | a monetary standard in which one ounce of gold equals a set number of dollars |
| 16. bank holiday | closing of banks during the Great Depression to avoid bank runs |
| 17. fireside chats | radio broadcasts made by Roosevelt to the American people to explain his initiatives |
| 18. deficit spending | government practice of spending borrowed money rather than raising taxes, usually in an attempt to boost the economy |
| 19. binding arbitration | process in which a neutral party hears arguments from two opposing sides and makes a decision that both must accept |
| 20. sit-down strike | method of boycotting work by sitting down at work and refusing to leave the establishment |
| 21. court-packing | the act of a leader to change the political balance of power in a nation's judiciary system by appointing judges who will rule in favor of his or her policies |
| 22. mediate | to attempt to resolve conflict between hostile people and groups |
| 23. broker state | role of government to work out conflicts among competing interest groups |
| 24. safety net | something that provides security against misfortune; specifically, government relief programs intended to protect against economic disaster |
