| Articles of Confederation | First constitution for the United States |
| James Madison | Virginian who was an influential delegate at the Constitutional Convention (also the 4th president) |
| Thomas Jefferson | Author of the Virginia Statute of Religios Freedom (also the 3rd President) |
| George Mason | Author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights |
| Virginia Plan | Virginian James Madison proposed this plan that said a government should share its powers |
| Three Fifths Compromise | Counting enslaved African Americans as three- fifths of a person when calculating state’s population |
| Separation of Powers | Powers of the government which are divided into 3 branches |
| Bill of Rights | Guarantee of individuals’ rights (the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution) |
| Shay's Rebellion | Farmers’ uprising against Massachusetts’s state government seizing land for unpaid taxes |
| Judicial Branch | A system of courts used to interpret the laws and to determine the law’s constitutionality |
| Executive Branch | Sees that the laws are carried out or enforced |
| Legislative Branch | Makes the laws – includes Congress |
| Constitutional Convention | Meeting in Philadelphia where delegates debated the structure of a new government |
| Compromise | An agreement in which each side gives up part of what it wants |
| Ratify | Means to approve |
| Amendment | Addition or change to a document |
| Confederation | new states working together a single group |
| Great Compromise | Decided how many votes each state had in the Senate and House of Representatives |
