| Muhammed | Born into a small clan. Angel Gabriel revealed to him verses to recite. He was a prophet |
| Hajj | Pilgrimage made by Muslims to Mecca |
| Hijrah | Journey from Mecca to Medina made by Muhammad in 622AD |
| Qur'an | Holy book of Islam, revealed to Muhammad by God |
| Mosque | Holy house of worship for Muslims. No furnishings or pictures, only prayer mats |
| Jihad | Struggle to defend the faith. If you die in this struggle you will go to heaven |
| Sunna | Muhammad’s example of proper living. Known as the “way of the prophet”. |
| Allah | The Muslim/Arabic word for God |
| Muslims | Followers of Islam |
| Dome of the Rock | Site in Jerusalem, where Muhammad is believed to have gone up into heaven. |
| Caliph | “Successor of the Prophet” |
| Sufi | Muslim mystics that lead a simple life devoted to God |
| Ramadan | Holy month in Islam when God revealed to Muhammad the Koran |
| Astrolabe | Allowed observers to chart the position of the stars and calculate their own position on earth |
| Imams | Muslim religious leaders. Leaders of the community and mosque for Shiite |
| Minaret | Tower attached to the mosque that would have a crier call out to Muslims to come and worship |
| Thousand and One Arabian Nights | Collection of Muslim Folktales including Sinbad and Aladdin |
| Sultan | Ruler of the Turks. Claimed to serve the Caliph |
| Sunni | Muslims who accepted Mu’awiyah as caliph. Muslim leaders could pick the next caliph |
| Shi’ah (Shi’ite) | Believed that only descendants of Ali could be caliph |
| Ka'aba | Place in Mecca where Muslims face to pray |
