| Classical Art | Figures were lifelike but often idealized, or more perfect than in real life |
| humanism | belief in the worth and potential of all individuals |
| perspective | a visual technique used to make people and objects look closer or farther away and to give realistic depth to a scene. |
| Medieval Art | Figures looked stiff, with little sense of movement |
| Renaissance Art | art that showed full backgrounds and showed perspective |
| patron | someone who commissioned (ordered and paid for) new buildings and art. |
| republic | a form of government in which citizens elect representatives to rule for them |
| humanities | collectively, areas of study that focus on human life and culture, such as history, literature, and ethics |
