Dust Bowl The area of the Great Plains that was hit by a drought that lasted through most of the 1930s then the land dried out and high winds often blew topsoil into huge dust storms
Drought A shortage of rainfall
Franklin Roosevelt The New York political leader who served as president from 1933 to 1945. He is best known for his New Deal programs, the various government efforts aimed at ending the Great Depression. He remained in office through most of World War ll, and died in 1945.
Eleanor Roosevelt Wife of Franklin Roosevelt and a strong advocate of human rights (1884 - 1962)
New Deal The term for many programs and agencies created by Franklin Roosevelt and Congress during the Great Depression.
Works Progress Administration (WPA) One of the New Deal programs created by Franklin Roosevelt and Congress during the Great Depression. It was designed to create jobs for unemployed workers.
Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) A New Deal program created to help farmers during the Great Depression. It attempted to what farms were producing and what the buyers needed, the AAA program gave payments to farmers to reduce the amount of land they planted in certain crops.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) A New Deal program created with two main goals: create jobs for unemployed young men and improve the environment.
Social Security Act A New Deal program that created a system of payments to retired workers, widows and children of workers who die, and disabled people unable to work.
National Labor Relations Act A law passed during the Great Depression to help improve the rights of workers and labor unions.
