Poetry Terms
| Term | Definition |

| stanza | A group of lines in a poem separated by a white space |
| couplet | a two line stanza often with end rhyme |
| soliloquy | a long speech made by a single character |
| meter | a rhythmic structure in a line of poetry involving stressed and unstressed syllables |
| free verse | a poem that has no structure, rhyme or rhythm |
| blank verse | a poem that does not rhyme but has a regular meter |
| narrative poem | a poem that tells a story |
| sonnet | a poem with 14 lines. Each line has ten syllables written in iambic pentameter |
| elegy | a sad poem about a person who has died |
| alliteration | the repetition of the same consonant sound |
| onomatopoeia | a word that sounds like what it represents |
| assonance | the repitition of the same vowel sound |
| repetition | a word or phrase that is repeated in a line of poetry or stanza |
| imagery | descriptive language |
| personification | giving human characteristics to an object or animal |
| simile | comparing two or more things using like or as |
| metaphor | a comparison between two objects using am, is , are, was, were, be, been |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| oxymoron | a description where two words are opposite of each other |
| internal rhyme | rhymes within a line of poetry |
| end rhyme | words at the end of a line of poetry that rhyme |
