TermDefinition
New Deal A series of domestic programs enacted in the United States between 1953 and 1938, and a few that came later.
Barter Exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money.
Subsidy A sum of money granted by the government or a public body to assist an industry or business so that the price of a commodity or service may remain low or competitive.
Labor union An organized association of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests.
Relief A feeling of reassurance and relaxation following release from anxiety or distress.
Strike A refusal to work organized by a body of employees as a form of protest, typically in an attempt to gain a concession or concessions from their employer.
Cooperative A farm, business, or other organization that is owned and run jointly by its members, who share the profits or benefits.
Recession A period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters.
Minimum wage The lowest wage permitted by law or by a special agreement (such as one with a labor union).
Social Security Act An act to provide for the general welfare by establishing a system of Federal old-age benefits.
Rural Eletrification Is the process of bringing electrical power to rural and remote areas.
Civilian Conservation Corps An innovative federally funded organization that put thousands of Americans to work during the Great Depression on projects with environmental benefits.
E.D. Rivers Served consecutive two-year terms as Georgia's governor (elected in 1936 and reelected in 1938).
Eugene Talmadge Played a leading role in the state's politics from 1926 to 1946.
