common terms in geography

TermDefinition
Geography study of people, places, and environments
Latitude imaginary lines running east to west on the globe, measure how far north or south of the equator, parallel
Equator major line of latitude, halfway between the North and South Poles, 0 degrees latitude
Longitude imaginary lines running north to south on the globe, measure how fare east or west of the prime meridian
Prime Meridian major line of longitude, runs from North Pole to South Pole through Greenwich, England, 0 degrees longitude
Hemisphere half of the globe, globe can be divided into northern and southern hemispheres (use equator) or eastern and western hemispheres (use prime meridian)
Location one of the 5 themes of geography, absolute location is the exact place while relative location describes where in relation to places around it
Place describes the physical characteristics or the human characteristics of an area
Region how different areas are similar or different based on their physical and human characteristics
Movement the exchange of people, goods, and ideas from one place or region to another
Human Environment Interaction how people adapt to the environment and change the Earth
Globe a model of the earth in the shape of a sphere
Map a representation of a part of the Earth
Climate typical weather conditions of a region over a long period of time
Urban relating to or located in a city
Rural relating to the country or farming
culture the shared attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors of a group
diversity having many different ways to think or do something, or a variety of people
economy a system for producing and exchanging goods and services among a group of people
government an organization set up to make and enforce the rules for a society
