| Bicameral legislature | divided into two houses: The Senate and the House of Representatives |
| Civil Law | Laws dealing with disputes between citizens (when someone sues someone else) as well as Juvenile Cases. |
| Criminal law | Laws dealing with criminal acts and their punishments |
| Declaration of Independence | A document that is used to separate a country from another country. EXAMPLE: Texas from Mexico (1836), the U.S.A. from the U.K. (1776) |
| Cabinet | a group of officials who work for and advise the Governor and control executive agencies. |
| Appoint | assign a job or role to someone. |
| Appeal | requesting a formal change to an official decision. |
| Attorney General | The top lawyer for the state. (Ken Paxton) |
| Annexed | add to, join, or attach. (example – the U.S. annexed the Republic of Texas and admitted it to the Union as the 28th state) |
| 1st amendment | Freedom of speech, religion, the press, petition, & assembly |
| 2nd amendment | Right To Bear Arms (guns) |
| 5th amendment | Right of due process of law (plead the 5th – don’t have to be a witness against yourself) |
