Due process People accused of crime are granted legal rights
Preamble to the Constitution Lists the purpose to be served by the Constitution.
Framers of Constitution created 3 separate branches of government To keep 1 group from gaining too much power.
First words of Constitution Power and authority in our govt come from the people.
Characteristic of federal system of govt Power is divided between central and regional bodies.
Amendments have given the right to vote to these groups: African Americans, Women, District of Columbia residents and 18 year olds.
Supremacy clause resolves conflicts between State and federal laws.
Example of constitutional checks & balances: Treaties require Senate approval
Marbury v. Madison (1803) Supreme Court can declare act of Congress unconstitutional.
Process of amending Constitution Involves both Congress and States.
