What is the term used for a servant in Sparta? helot
What was the basic rule of Sparta? Always put the city's needs above your own.
Why would community leaders examine newborn infants in Sparta? To determine whether the infants were healthy.
At what age were boys sent away for military training? Age 7
Why were the soldiers-in-training encouraged to steal? Stealing would help soldiers learn how to live off the land during a war.
What would happen to a boy if he was caught stealing? He would be severely punished.
Why were girls allowed to train and compete in wrestling and spear throwing? Spartans believed that girls who grew up strong and healthy would have strong, healthy children.
Spartan warriors were known for what? They were known for their skill and bravery.
Who invaded Athens in 490 B.C.? The Persians
How was the smaller Athenian army able to defeat the large Persian army? The Athenians rushed the Persians and caught them off-guard.
How did the Greeks finally drive the Persians away? The city-states were united and worked together, instead of fighting one another.
How long did the Peloponnesian War last? 27 years
What is a plague? Widespread disease
How was Sparta able to defeat Athens? A plague struck Athens, wiping out 1/3 of its people. Sparta set up a blockade to cut off food shipments to Athens.
