Fidel Castro | Cuban politician and revolutionary who served as Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, he is also known for his ties to communism and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. |
Bay of Pigs Invasion | 1961 failed invasion of Cuba by a CIA-led force of Cuban exiles |
Cuban Missile Crisis | 1962 conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union resulting from the Soviet installation of missiles in Cuba. |
Nikita Khrushchev | Russian politician who led the Soviet Union during part of the Cold War. He was also known for his involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis. |
Berlin Wall | Dividing wall built by East Germany in 1961 to isolate West Berlin from Communist controlled East Berlin |
Space Race | The competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to develop the technology to successfully land on the moon |
Economic Opportunity Act | Law passed in 1964 creating antipoverty programs in the United States |
Great Society | President Johnson's goals in the areas of healthcare, education, the environment, discrimination, and poverty. |
Medicare | Federal program created in 1965 to provide basic hospital insurance to most Americans over the age of 65 |
Medicaid | Federal program created in 1965 to provide low cost healthcare insurance to poor Americans of any age. |
