| Reference Map | Shows the location of the geographic areas for which census data are tabulated and disseminated. |
| Thematic Map | Is a type of map especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area. |
| Global Positioning System (GPS) | Is a radio navigation system that allows land, sea, and airborne users to determine their exact location, velocity, and time 24 hours a day, |
| Geographic Information System (GIS) | Is a computerized data management system used to capture, store, manage, retrieve, analyze, and display spatial information. |
| Distance Scale | The scale of a map is the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground |
| Directional Indicator | A directional indicator is usually an arrow (or a compass rose) printed on a map which indicates the orientation of the map in reference to the cardinals N-S-E-W. |
| Inset Map | A small map set within a larger map. An inset map might show a detailed part of the map at a larger scale, or the extent of the existing map drawn at a smaller scale within the context of a larger area. |
| Legend | Is a small table accompanying the map that explains the symbols that are used on the map. |
| Latitude(parallels) | The measurement, in degrees, of a place's distance North or South of the equator. |
| Longitude(meridians) | The measurement, in degrees, of a place's distance East or West of the equator. |
| Equator | An imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres |
| Prime Meridian | The earth's zero of longitude |
| Northern Hemisphere | The Northern half of the Earth's surface. (The half of the earth that lies north of the equator) |
| Southern Hemisphere | The Southern half of the Earth's surface. (The part of the earth that lies south of the equator) |
| Eastern Hemisphere | The Eastern half of the Earth's surface. ( The half of the earth east of the Atlantic Ocean including Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa) |
| Western Hemisphere | The Western half of the Earth's surface. (The northern half of the Earth's surface) |
| Continents | Any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America). |
| Map Grid | A framework of crisscrossed or parallel bars; a grating or mesh. |
