Ramadan Muslim holy month ; occurs during the month that the 'an says Muhammad began receiving his messages from Allah; fasting occurs during this month.
Five Pillars of Islam Five acts of worship required by all Muslims; faith, prayer, fasting, giving to charity and pilgrimage
Hajj a pilgrimage to Mecca; all Muslims are expected tot try to make this journey at least once in their lives
Hegira Muhammad's journey from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD
Sunnah A collection of writings about the way Muhammad lived that provides a model for Muslims to follow
Sunni Muslims who believe caliphs do not have to be related to Muhammad; believe the majority of the community can interpret Islamic teachings
Shia Muslims who believe that only Muhammad's descendants could become caliphs; true interpretation of Islamic teachings can only come from these leaders
Islamic Golden Age Period of cultural and territorial growth for the faith. Lasted from roughly 750 CE to 1258 CE
Islam Religion practiced by Muslims who follow Muhammad
Allah The Arabic word meaning "God"
Caliph A title that Muslims use for the highest leader of Islam
Calligraphy A form of decorative writing; used to decorate mosques and other buildings
Imam Religious leader of Islam
