Ethnicity

TermDefinition
Ethnic Neighborhood an area within the city containing numerous members of the same ethnicity due to the encouragement of previous relatives living there these neighborhoods can later turn into ghettos
Social Distance measure of the perceived differences between an immigrant ethnic group and the host society if distance is high the longer the ethnic neighborhood last
Ethnicity refers to a group who share a common identity first used in 1940s as an alternate term for "race" includes percieved social and cultural identity
Ethnic Provinces when entire regions become associated with ethnic or racial aggregations Example: African Americans in the U.S. Southeast
Diaspora experiences of people who come from a common ethnic background but live in different regions or ethnic neighborhoods often referred to when talking about Jews and people of African decent Example: shown through music, food, or religious traditions
Ethnic Islands small, rural areas settled by a single ethnic group as opposed to ethnic neighborhoods or enclaves, which are urban Example: Italians and Armenians in Cali
Charter Group The first ethnic group to establish cultural norms in an area whose imprints affects modern cultural geo of an area For example eastern America's cultural geo was influenced by Brits but SW cultural geo displays more Spanish influence
Ethnic Enclaves a relatively small area occupied by a distant culture or ethnicity,which largely result from chain migration (Chinatown) ease the adaptation by providing places that remind them of home such as business, food, clothing
Ethnic Cleaning and Genocide cleaning involves the effort to rid a country or region of everyone of a particular ethnicity either through forced migration or a genocide a genocide is a premeditated effort to kill everyone from a particular ethnic group (Hitler with the Jews)
Syncretism development of a new cultural trait as a result of the fusion of two distinct but interacting culture huge factor in cultural change is to make them more appealing to receiving societies
Apartheid a legal system that was the physical separation of different races into different geographic area
Balkanization the process by which a state breaks down through conflicts among it ethnicites
Nationality the identity with a group of people who share legal attachment and personal allegiance to a particular country similar to ethnicity in that membership in both is defined through shared cultural values
Centripetal Force an attitude that tends to unify people and enhance support for a state "directed toward the center" most nation states find the best way to achieve this is to emphasized shared attitude that unify the people
Self-Determination concept that ethnicities have the right to govern themselves during the 19th and 20th centuries political leaders supported the right of self-determination
Nation-State is a state whose territory corresponds to that occupied by a particular ethnicity that has been transformed into a nationality
Nationalism the loyalty and devotion to a nationally typically promotes a sense of national consciousness that exalts one nation above all other and emphasizes its culture and interest as opposed to those of other nations
racsim is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial difference produce and inherent superiority of a particular race
racist a person who subscribes to the beliefs of racism
blockbusting a process by which real estate agents convinced white homeowners living near a black area to sell their houses at low prices, preying on their fears that black families would soon move into the neighborhood and cause property values to decline
Triangular slave trade an efficient triangular trading pattern where ships from Europe went to Africa with cloth and other trade good and in return got slaves, From their they went to the Western Hemisphere where they took the slaves
sharecropper a person who works fields rented from a landowner and pats the rent by turning over to the landowner a share of the crops
race the identity with a group of people who share a biological ancestor comes from the French word for generation
multi-ethnic state a state that contains more than one ethnicity
multinational staes contain two ethnic groups with traditions of self-determinism that agree to coexist peacefully by recognizing each other as distinct nationalities
Balkanized a century ago was widely used to describe a small geographic area that could not successful be organized into on or more stable states because it was inhabited by many ethnicites with complex, long-standing antagonisms toward each other
