| Cold War | the war of ideals between the Soviet Union and its allies, and the U.S., and its allies, from the late 1940s to 1991; it did not lead to direct military conflict |
| Marshall Plan | when the U.S. gave $13 billion to Europe from 1948-1952 to help its economy recover from WWII, and to help prevent the spread of communism |
