| Great Depression | a period of worldwide economic despair and terrible poverty from 1929 to 1942 in some places |
| Black Tuesday | On October 29, 1929, when the United States experienced the biggest loss in financial worth in the stock market |
| Paul von Hindenburg | WWI general who became German President after the war |
| Economic Crash of 1929 | the event that caused the Great Depression |
| Nazism | Hitler’s form of fascism, which was extremely racist, started World War II, and killed Jews and others during the Holocaust |
| Proletariat | name given to the working class under communist ideology |
| Bourgeoisie | the middle class, or the capitalist class who own most of society's wealth and means of production under communist ideology |
| Socialism | government which controls the means of production and the distribution of land and property |
| Joseph Stalin | communist leader of the Soviet Union from 1928 until 1953 |
| Gestapo | Hitler’s secret police which intimidated or arrested anyone against Hitler |
| Fascism | an aggressively nationalist, totalitarian government that glorifies the state above the individual |
| Calling the loan | when a bank demands immediate and full repayment of a loan earlier than scheduled |
| Collectivization | taking land and property away from private citizens so that the government can decide how it is to be used |
| Hyperinflation | printing so much money that money becomes almost completely worthless; this ruins a country’s economy; this happened to Germany after World War I |
| Weimar Republc | Democratic government installed in Germany after WWI. It didn’t work for long. |
