How did the Northwest Territory become a state? A portion of the territories had at least 60,000 free inhabitants. Settlers draft their own constitution and petition Congress to be admitted to the Union as a state. Contained a bill of rights which required public education be provided for the citizens of the region. Banned slavery in the region.
Who led the Shay's Rebellion? Daniel Shays
What is Shay's Rebellion? A rebellion to make sure no one's farm could be foreclosed by closing down courts in western Massachusetts.
When and Where did Shay's Rebellion take place? When: September 1786 Where: Outside Springfield, Massachusetts.
Why did Shay's Rebellion happened? Farmers had trouble paying their debts during the Depression. Massachusetts courts force the farmers to sell their property. The Massachusetts courts also force the farmers in debt to either serve terms in debtors' prison or to sell themselves into indentured servitude.
What influences from England did the writers of the Articles of Confederation draw inspiration? Magna Carta English Bill of Rights Political philosophies of the Enlightenment
What influences from the colonies did the writers of the Articles of Confederation draw inspiration? New England town meeting Virginia House of Burgesses Written documents that incorporated the ideas of self-government
What is republic? A type of government where the head of state is elected and the citizens hold the political power.
Why did Maryland not sign the Articles of Confederation till 1781? They want other states to give up their western land claims.
What are the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? Each state has only one vote. Congress could coin and borrow money. Congress could make treaties with foreign nations and American Indians. Congress could resolve conflicts between the states. Congress could ask states for money and soldiers, but could not force the states to contribute them. There was no federal executive, such as a president. There was no national court system.
What is the Land Ordinance of 1785? Called for surveys and division of the western lands. Divided western lands into townships of 36 square miles. Divided townships further into 36 lots of 640 acres each. Required each township to put aside one lot of land for a public school, four lots for Revolutionary War veterans, and the rest goes to sale for the public.
