Warlord A leader who has his own army

Ancestor A family member who is no longer living
Pictograph A symbol in a writing system based on pictures
Ideograph A symbol in a writing system that represents a thing or an idea
Bureaucracy A group of non-elected government officials
Censor An official who made sure that government workers did their jobs
Currency Something that is used as money
Tenant Farmer A farmer who works land owned by someone else
Acupuncture A Chinese practice of inserting fine needles through the skin to treat disease or relieve pain
Confucianism A system of beliefs based on the teachings of Confucius; duty is central idea
Daoism A Chinese philosophy focused on obtaining long life and living in harmony with nature
Legalism A Chinese philosophy based on the importance of laws
Social Class A group of people at a similar cultural, economic, or educational level
Filial Piety The responsibility that children have to respect, obey, and care for their parents
Hereditary Having title or possession by reason of birth (In Ancient Chine - When an aristocrat died, a son or another member of his family governed the territory.
Mandate of Heaven The belief that the Chinese king's right to rule came from the gods.
Dao Chinese system of beliefs which describes the way a king must rule
Civil Service The administrative service of a government (People who work for the government)
Neo-Confucianism A new form of the ideas of the philosopher Confucius; included Buddhist and Daoist beliefs
Porcelain A ceramic made of fine clay baked at very high temperatures
Calligraphy Artistic Handwriting
Steppe Flat, Dry Grassland
Terro Violent acts that are meant to cause fear in people
Census A count of the number of people in a country
Novel A long fictional story
