PARCC Word Practice

These words you will see and use on the Parcc test.....so lets understand them!

claims to assert as fact
support to back up, justify with evidence
evidence facts or observable information that can support a claim or an answer
key details the specifics that are explicitly (plainly) written in a text that support or expand the main/central idea of the text
main/central idea the author's most important idea or main message
meaning the significance or importance of something
structure the relationship of component parts that combine to form a whole
theme a unifying or dominant idea or motif; what did you learn? Can it be applied to other situations?
analyze to break down the whole into its parts
identify to recognize or establish as particular by noting individual characteristics; to pick out/point out
describe to tell or show with written or spoken words; point out facts or details
determine to decide something based on observations or reasoning
infer to guess or figure out something that is not explicit based on observations or reasoning
compare examine in order to state the similarities or sameness
contrast examine in order to state the differences
summarize to state or express in concise or short form the most important parts of somehting (usually in chronological order)
