SOCIAL - TermsDefinition
CULTURE the beliefs, custom & arts of a particular society
RITUAL the rules of behavior that members of a society follow
NORMS the cultural expectations for how to behave in specific situations
MORES strict norms that control moral & ethical behavior
TABOO a norm that society holds so strongly that breaking it leads to extreme disgust
STIGMA society's disapproval of a member who disobeys established norms and mores - example the there is a stigma for women who are not married and have children
RACE physical characteristics such as skin color eye color & hair texture
SATIRE the use of humor to exaggerate or criticize people's foolishness
MATERIALISM to consider material possessions as more important than anything else
HEDONIC TREADMILL whatever level of money you have nnow, you adapt to it and always want more
ROLES parts of aa society expects a person to play in a given social position
SOCIALIZATION a proces where a person learnsthe values & behaviorsof their culture
CODE SWITCHING the ability to change dialect and words depending on who you are speaking to: example -switching u the way u talk to black friends versus your white friends
