Oklahoma in Early America

Spain early 1700s Spain claimed most of Texas and all the land to the south and west to the Pacific Ocean.
France early 1700s the French claimed the massive western Mississippi River drainage basin along with the Great Lakes region and parts of Canada.

French and Indian War French were trying to move into the Ohio River Valley seeking more fur trade and the British also wanted the same land.

Sparks Expedition 1806 expedition which traveled along the Red River until they were confronted by the Spanish army.
Pike-Wilkinson Expedition 1806 expedition to explore the Arkansas and Red Rivers and to make contact with the tribes that he encountered. They continued on to the Rocky Mountains.
Sibley Expedition 1811 expedition to make friends and allies with the Indians and to find the salt mountain. They traveled into Northwestern Oklahoma and discovered the Great Salt Plains.
Long Expedition sent to Oklahoma to find a suitable site for establishing a military post on the western boundary of the Arkansas territory to address hostilities between the Osage and other tribes. Also explored the Red and Arkansas Rivers to the Rocky Mou
Bell Expedition split from the Long expedition and went south to the Red River.
Thomas Say father of American zoology who was on the Bell expedition and took detailed notes of plants, animals, minerals and people they saw. Referred to parts of Oklahoma as "the Great American Desert"
Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 Spain sold Florida to the US for $5 million, set borders between Spain and the US and Spain gave up its claims to the Oregon Territory.

Three Forks Area location northeast of present day Muskogee where three rivers meet (Arkansas, Verdigris, Grand). This becomes a trading hub.
William Becknell Missouri trader who carried a caravan or wagons carrying merchandise for Santa Fe.
keelboat popular form of river transportation which could carry 10-20 tons of merchandise and would be pulled by a towline pulled by 20-30 men.
