What did the Southern colonies base their economies on? Plantations and slavery. They grew tobacco, rice, and cotton
Who was the proprietor of Maryland? Lord Baltimore
Why was Georgia founded? To defend the colonies from French Louisina and Spanish Florida
What colony was established by the Dutch and what was it renamed? New Netherland, renamed New York
What is a patroon? A person who brought 50 people to New Netherland and received a land grant.
Who was Roger Williams? The founder of Rhode Island
Was Maryland a middle, southern, or New England colony? Southern
Why did the English want to colonize America? To acquire riches and gain wealth like Spain.
What was the Mayflower Compact? Written by Pilgrims before landing in New England
Who were the Puritans? They founded Boston, which became the most important town in New England
Who was Anne Hutchinson? She was a dissenter who fled to Rhode Island after being banished from Massachusetts
Who were Quakers? A religious group believing that sermons and ministers were obstacles to God
What were the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut? Expanded representative government by extending voting rights to non-church members
Why did the English settle Jamestown where they did? The spot was safe from Spanish Attack
Who was Peter Stuyvesant? The 1st governor of New Netherland
Where did William Penn receive land from? King Charles II as a debt to his family
