| personification | Giving human characteristics to a abstract ex: The chair walked out the room |
| onomatopoeia | Using words that makes sounds Ex: boom |
| hyperbole | exaggeration Ex. My teacher gave us a ton of homework |
| alliteration | use of the same consonant at the beggining of each stressed syllable Ex. She sells sea shells by the sea shore |
| idiom | an expression whose meanings cannot be inferred from the meaning s of words that make it up |
| irony | incongruity between what might be expected and what actually ocucurs |
| symbolism | the practice of investing things with symbolic meaning |
| imagery | the ability to form mental images of things or events |
