Basic Map Skills

Basic Map Skill Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Latitude Lines Lines that measure in degrees north and south. They circle the globe. The Equator is an example.
Longitude Lines Lines that measure in degrees east and west. The meet at the north and south poles. The Prime Meridian is an example.
Equator The 0 degree line of latitude
Prime Meridian The 0 degree line of longitude
Cardinal Directions North, South, East and West
Intermediate Directions Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest
Physical Map A map that shows natural features like mountains and deserts and shows elevation
Political Map A map then shows country or state boundaries
Population Density Map A map that shows how many people live in an area
