Arabia's location made it important for what activity? trading goods
What is a nomad? a nomad is a person who moves from place to place
Why did some nomads find oases a great place to live? because there was water there, they could grow crops and build their houses
Most people living on Arabia's coastal plain were: farmers and traders
Terrace's, dams, and irrigation syetems were all systems used to manage this resource: water
Nomads would sometimes choose a sedentary lifestyle, this means: they packed up their tents and built a house, no longer moving around
What are the environmental factors of the DESERT? people were nomads, they raised sheeps, goats, and camels, lived in tents, wore loose fitting clothes and headdresses, traded animal products with merchants in towns
What was the environment of the OASES like? water was trapped under the ground, fertile land where plants grow, springs
How did people adapt to living in the oases? grew fruit like dates and peaches, grew date and plam trees and used them to buidl houses, traded with nomads for things they needed
What was the environment of the COASTAL PLAIN? ranges from 5 to 40 miles inland, it ends in rocky cliffs, a few natural harbors
What was the environment of the MOUNTAINS? 1,000 TO 12,000 feet high, 20 inches of rain per year, cool in summer, frost in winter
How did people adapt to living in the mountains? made houses of mud bricks, built terraces, used ashes to fertilize soil, built dams and irrigation systems, stored water fro dry times, grew fruits like melons and pomegranates
