Who was York in the Louis and Clark expedition? Clark's slave - he was the first black man to cross North America
Who was Sacagawea? A young Shoshone woman. She helped Louis and Clark cross the Rocky Mountains and speak with tribes they met along the way
When was the Florida acquisition? 1819
In the early 1800's, much of Florida was controlled by what country? Spain
Runaway slaves from Georgia sometimes hid with what group? The Seminoles in Florida
In 1817, what general marched into Florida and took over? General Andrew Jackson
Did President James Monroe fully support General Jackson capturing the Spanish forts in Florida? No he didn't, but the president wanted the land so he didn't stop the General Jackson.
Why did Spain finally agree to sell Florida to the US? Spain realized that it couldn't defend itself against the US.
How much did the US pay settlers in Georgia to make up for slaves lost to the Seminoles and from the Seminole raids? $5 million
What happened to the Seminoles in Florida? US told them to leave but many refused.
What happened when the Seminoles fought a battle against the US to stay in Florida? Many Seminoles were killed. The remaining had to move west.
In what year was the Texan annexation? 1845
In the early 1800s, what country ruled most of what is now Mexico and the southwestern and western parts of the US? Spain
In 1821, what did Mexico do? Became independent from Spain
Americans were allowed to settle in Mexico if they agreed to do what? Obey Mexican laws and become Catholic
Why did slavery become a problem for the American settlers in Texas/Mexico? Mexico outlawed slaves but allowed American settlers to have them. American were worried that the Mexican government would free their slaves.
Americans wanted Texas to become a part of the US, so what did Mexico do? Mexico made a law to stop more Americans from settling in Texas.
In 1835, why were Texas settlers and the Mexican government fighting? the Americans wanted independence for Texas
When the President of Mexico marched his troops into Texas, where did the battle against Americans happen? The Alamo (an old mission/church)
How long was the did the Americans fight off Santa Anna's (the president of Mexico) army at the Alamo? 10 days
Who was chosen to be the leader of the Texas army? Sam Houston
What did the Texas army shout against President Santa Anna's army in San Jacinto? (Santa Anna was the president of Mexico.) Remember the Alamo!
When the Texas army captured President Santa Anna, why did they let him go? Santa Anna promised to give Texas his independence.
In what year was Oregon Country acquired? 1846
The territory of Oregon Country was what area? Washington, Oregon, and parts of Canada
Who controlled the Oregon Country? The US and Great Britain
What happened to the land the Native Americans had in the Oregon Country? Congress gave it to settlers and the settlers turned the hunting lands into farms.
For many years, there were wars between the Native Americans and the settlers in the Oregon Country. What happened to the Native Americans? They were forced onto reservations.
When was the Mexican Cessation? 1848
When was the Gadsden Purchase? 1853
What was the cause of the Mexican War? The US had Texas and Mexico wanted it back.
What river were US and Mexican government fighting over? Rio Grande
Why did President Polk agree to go to war against Mexico? Some Americans were killed in a battle over the Rio Grande River.
In what year did the Mexican finally surrender in the Mexican War? 1848
In 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo. What was that? It was the Mexican Cessasion. It gave the US a huge part of land from Mexico.
How much did the US pay Mexico for the land up to the Rio Grande? $15 million
In 1853, the US bought more land from Mexico for $10 million. What did the US get for the $10 million? Arizona and New Mexico
What was the Gadsden Purchase? The Gadsden Purchase was when the US bought Arizona and New Mexico for $10 million from Mexico.
What happened to the Native Americans (mostly Apaches) that were in the land from the Gadsden purchase? The Apaches fought battles with the settlers, but the Apaches were eventually forced into reservations.
