Fort Sumter Battle - April 12th, 1861, legacy: first official battle of Civil War Union property + Confederate territory, Union sent supplies via boat, Confederates attacked fort
Mississippi River Cuts transportation off for south, wanted by north - cuts Confederacy in half, good vantage point for north
Stonewall Jackson Confederate general, lost arm in battle, gained nickname when he stood in front of attacking Union troops through a battle
Shiloh Battle - April 6th to April 7th, 1862 in Tennessee, Union victory, 23,756 casualties, legacy: surprise attack on Union
War goals of north Keep country together, show the Confederacy their wrongs and how to fix them
War goals of south Keep slavery, form a new country to abide by their own rules
Lincoln Assassination April 14th - shot, April 15th, 1865 - died because of this, shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theater
Total War Destroying anything your enemy can use
Copperhead Nickname given to people opposing war, after poisonous snake; people in the north who did not support the war and called for a peace conference with the south
Gettysburg Address November 19th, 1863 - reminder of promise of equality for all, for a truly United States

Merrimack vs. Moniter March 1862, first battle of ironclads (ships), revolutionized Naval warfare
