Ancient Civilizations Vocabulary

| empire | a large area in which different groups of people are controlled by one ruler or government. |
| tribute | forced payment, usually made in the form of valuable goods. |
| slavery | the practice of people owning other people and forcing them to work. |
| conquistador | Spanish leaders who conquered America. |
| alliances | agreement between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes. |
| small pox | a highly infectious disease. |
| sacrifices | surrender of something of value as a means of gaining something more desirable. |
| artifact | an object left behind by people who lived long ago. |
| drought | a long period with very little rain. |
| irrigation | a method of supplying dry land with water through a series of ditches or pipes. |
| civilization | a culture that has developed complex systems of government, education, and religion. They usually have large populations with many people living in cities. |
| surplus | an amount greater than what is needed. |
| specialize | to spend most of one's time doing one kind of job. |
| archaeologist | a scientist who looks for and studies artifacts. |
