Chapter 3 vocabulary

Ancient Civilizations Vocabulary

TermDefinition
empire a large area in which different groups of people are controlled by one ruler or government.
tribute forced payment, usually made in the form of valuable goods.
slavery the practice of people owning other people and forcing them to work.
conquistador Spanish leaders who conquered America.
alliances agreement between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes.
small pox a highly infectious disease.
sacrifices surrender of something of value as a means of gaining something more desirable.
artifact an object left behind by people who lived long ago.
drought a long period with very little rain.
irrigation a method of supplying dry land with water through a series of ditches or pipes.
civilization a culture that has developed complex systems of government, education, and religion. They usually have large populations with many people living in cities.
surplus an amount greater than what is needed.
specialize to spend most of one's time doing one kind of job.
archaeologist a scientist who looks for and studies artifacts.
