Government

Government Terms for 7th Grade Social Studies

TermDefinition
autocracy One person has uncontrolled or unlimited authority over others
Monarchy Government in which a king or queen inherits the right to rule a country.
constitution the way in which a thing is composed or made up; makeup; composition:
democracy Government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
dictator A person exercising absolute power, esp. a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession.
Federal government divided between national and state powers.
oligarchy A form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a dominant class or clique; government by the few.
parliamentary government government in which voters elect representatives to a law-making body, which chooses a prime minister
Presidential Government a system of government in which also called an executive branch exist but is separate from the legislature.
unitary A system of government in which the executive, legislative, and judicial powers of each state in a body of states are vested in a central authority
