Why was Common Sense popular? Common Sense is popular because of both its message and its style. Paine wrote as a common man to a common people. Reached a wider audience than most other pamphlet writers of his day.
How many copies of Common Sense was bought? Colonists bought around 120,000 copies within three months. Sales throughout the colonies and Europe eventually reached some 500,000 copies.
Who was the wealthy person from France that allied with the Patriots during the Revolution? The Marquis de Lafayette
What was the advantages of British at the beginning of the war? Has a great financial resources. Maintained a large mighty military force. Soldiers were mostly well-trained professionals. Had "the most powerful navy in the history of the world."
What was the Colonists' navy like? No navy No organized army. Only had poorly trained local militias.
What was the advantages of the Colonists? Most of the civilian population supported the Revolution throughout the war, even when enduring great hardship. Citizens were mostly hostile to its presence. British had to ship supplies across the Atlantic Ocean, which slowed down their war effort.
What is mercenaries? Hired foreign soldiers.
What was Washington's first job? To raise troops.
What was the colonists' policy about slaves being in the army? Southerners opposed using black soldiers in the army, though they relied heavily on slave labor to fund the war. Prohibited African Americans from serving in the Continental Army.
What did Washington do in response to Lord Dunmore's Proclamation? Allowed free African Americans to enlist.

What did the women do to help the Patriots' troops? Running farms and businesses while men were off fighting. Help cook, clean, and, sew for the army. Served as nurses, spies, or messengers. Disguised themselves as men to fight in the war. Raised money for supplies and organized sewing groups to make clothing.
What was an advantage of the long rifle? A bullet from Long Rifle travel farther and with greater accuracy than a shot fire from a regular musket.

Why did some Patriots want to fight a defensive war? The army was short on supplies.
What did some Patriots want to make Canada into? The "14th colony."
Who was the Hessians? Mercenaries from the German state of Hesse hired to fight for the British.

What are three provisions of the Treaty of Paris of 1783? Established British's recognition of the United States. Laid out the new nation's borders: the Great Lakes to the north, the Mississippi River to the west, and 31° north latitude to the south. British formally accepted American rights to settle and trade west of the original thirteen colonies.
What three things did the First Continental Congress accomplished? Colonists continue to boycott British goods. Warn their militias to be prepared in case violence did break out. Assembled a carefully worded list of 10 resolutions, also known as the Declaration of Resolves, to present to King George III.
What three things did the Second Continental Congress accomplished? Organize and fund a Continental Army to defend the colonies. Delegates signed the Olive Branch Petition, a peace request named for the olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace, and deliver the petition to King George III. Appointed a five-person committee to write the Declaration of Independence.
