The Tea Act was passed by the parliament on April 27, 1773. The British gave the East India Company a monopoly (when a company is the only supplier of a certain good). The British were trying to save the East India Company from going bankrupt. The British lifted the duty on tea and brought in by the East India Company from making the tea cheaper
