2nd Amendment | Right to bear arms |
3rd Amendment | Prohibits the quartering of troops in private homes |
4th Amendment | Protects us against “unreasonable searches and seizures”. Officer must have probable cause. Must get a search warrant. |
5th Amendment | 1. No one can be tried for a serious crime w/out an indictment. 2. Prevents putting someone on trail more than once for the same crime. (Double Jeopardy) 3. Protects an accused persons right to remain silent. 4. States no one may be denied life, libert |
6th Amendment | 1. Requires that persons be clearly told what the charges against them are. 2. Allows the accused to have trial by jury. 3. An accused person has the right to hear and question all witnesses against them and must be allowed to call witnesses in defense. |
7th Amendment | Concerns civil cases Rights to a trial by jury. |
8th Amendment | Allows the accused to remain free while waiting for trial on bail. Forbids “excessive” bails. Forbids “cruel and unusual punishments.” |
9th Amendment | All other rights not listed in the constitution are kept by the people. |
10th Amendment | 1. Recognizes the power of the federal government is limited. 2. States that any power that constitution does not specifically give to the federal government belong to the states or the people. |
Civil Liberties | the freedoms we have to think and to act without interference from the government or without fearing that we will be treated unfairly. |
Censorship | banning printed materials or films because they have alarming or offensive ideas. |
Petition | a formal request for the government to act |
Slander | Spoken untruths that are harmful to someone’s reputation. |
Libel | Written untruths that are harmful to someone’s reputation. |
Search Warrant | allows officers to search a suspect’s home , business, or other property and take certain items as evidence. |
Indictment | a document issued by a body called a grand jury that formally charges someone with a crime. |
Double Jeopardy | Putting someone on trial for a crime of which he or she was previously found innocent. |
Due Process | following set legal procedures |
Eminent Domain | the government right to take private property; usually land, for public use. |
Civil Cases | lawsuits that arise when people's rights are in conflict. |
Bail | a sum of money used as a security deposit. |
