| Ethnic Group | Group of people who share common ancestry, language, religion, customs, or combination of such characteristics |
| Religious Group | a body of people who share a common set of beliefs. |
| Literacy Rate | The percentage of a country's people who can read and write. |
| culture | The enduring behaviors, ideas, attitudes, and traditions shared by a large group of people and transmitted from one generation to the next. |
| dialect | local form of a language that differ from the main language in pronunciation or the meaning of words. |
| cultural diffusion | The spread of ideas, customs, and technologies from one people to another |
| population density | number of individuals per unit area |
| customs | a traditional and widely accepted way of behaving or doing something that is specific to a particular society, place, or time. |
| traditions | customs or beliefs that are passed on from generation to generation |
| Judaism | the first monotheistic religion, founded by Abraham, and whose followers are called Jews |
| Islam | a religion that teaches that there is one God and Muhammad is his messenger |
| Christianity | a religion that developed out of Judaism and was based on the life and teachings of Jesus |
| Sunni Muslim | Sunnis believe that Mohammad did not appoint a successor (replacement), and therefore one had to be appointed by the Muslims themselves. |
| Shia Muslim | believed that Mohammad had designated Ali as his successor and spiritual heir. They believed that Mohammad's heir should be from Mohammad's family and a political leader. |
| Arabs | ethnic group located in the Middle East and North Africa; language spoken is Arabic |
| Persians | ethnic group located primarily in Iran (Iran was formally the Persian Empire) |
| Kurds | an ethnic group that lives in the mountainous regions of Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and turkey; most are Sunni Muslims; Kurds do not have their own state/country |
| monotheist | belief in one god |
| Torah | religious text/book for the Jewish religion (Judaism), made up of the first 5 books of the Old Testament (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Numbers) |
| Qur’an | religious text/book for the Islamic religion (Islam) |
| Jerusalem | city in Israel considered holy by Jews, Christians, and Muslims |
| Church | place of worship for the Christian religion |
| Jesus | founder of a religion of love & forgiveness whose followers, called Christians, believe he is the Messiah or Savior |
| Abraham | the first monotheist, whose descendants are known as Jews, founder of Judaism |
| Muhammad | founder of Islam whom Muslims believe to be God’s prophet |
| Caliph | title used by rulers of the Muslim community from 632-1924 |
