Cuban Freedom 1898 Teller Amendment- U.S would not control or annex Cuba. This was not the case
Cuba made a Constitution. U.S said that this was fine but they had a few things that needs to be added 1900
The Platt Amendment No treaties that allowed foreign power to control any part of Cuba, U.S could not intervene in Cuba to "Preserve independence or maintain order", Cuba could not go into debt, and U.S could buy or lease land for naval bases and coaling stations.
Why Cuba? Cuba was a protectorate, money on sugar, tobacco, and mining, military- U.S established base, U.S troops withdrawn in 1902 but returned several times during the next 20 years
The Philippines People mad about annexation of Philippines. McKinley said we should, "educate the Filipinos and uplift and Christianize them."
Emilo Aguinaldo Rebel leader, became president of Philippines, Republic of Philippines declared war, Filipino nationalists revolted against Spain, Rebels started fighting Spanish forces in 1896 and we're quite successful.
Philippine-American War Lasted until mid 1902, 20,000 Filipinos killed, 4,000 Americans killed, Tens of thousands of Filipinos killed in camps set up by U.S, U.S attempted to "civilize" Philippines by sending Thomasites and other good will programs. Independence-1946

The Panama Canal 1901- the British gave the U.S exclusive rights to build a canal through Central America, 2 routes possible
How did we receive rights for Panama Canal? Panama was not independent, Columbia wouldn't approve treaty with Britain giving us rights to build a canal, we helped to construct a revolution in Panama, when "uprising" began U.S ships blocked Columbian troops, revolt was a success and treaty signed.
Canal Construction Started in 1904, over 5,609 workers died
American Policy in Latin America Monroe Doctrine- James Monroe wanted European powers not to interfere in the Western Hemisphere and we should stay out of Europe, Roosevelt Corollary- Disorder in Latin America would lead to U.S intervention ="police power"
Mexican Revolution Dictatorship lead by Porfrio Diaz, welcomed foreign investment, and the U.S obliged with heavy investment in oil wells, etc, rebels led by Francisco Madero were victorious. He is president.
Francisco Madero Unable to satisfy peasants, middle class, factory workers, 2 years later a coup lead by Victoriano Huerta gave him the presidency, this made American business leaders mad, U.S denounces rebellion also says U.S is for who "act in interest of peace"
Emiliano Zapta and Francisco "Pancho" Villa lead revolts Problems in Mexico
Villa shot some American engineers visiting Mexico, and had raided Columbus, New Mexico and killed 17 Americans U.S decides Villa needed firm talking to 1916
General John Pershing Pershing and 15000 American troops went into Mexico, "hunt down" Villa. Couldn't find him withdrew inn1917, Anti-American feelings strong
