Reconstruction

Vocabulary from the Reconstruction Period

TermDefinition
Reconstruction The period after the Civil War in the United States when the Southern states were reorganized and reintegrated into the Union
13th Amendment Abolished slavery in the United States
14th Amendment Declares that all persons born in the U.S. are citizens and are guaranteed equal protection under the law
15th Amendment Amendment that extended suffrage (right to vote) to all races
Andrew Johnson 17th President of the United States was elected Vice-President and succeeded Lincoln after he was assassinated; was impeached but acquitted by one vote.
Black Codes Laws denying most legal rights to newly freed slaves; passed by Southern States following the Civil War
Carpetbaggers Northerners who moved to the South after the Civil War for political or financial reasons during Reconstruction. Southerners viewed them with hate and vengeance.
Freedmen's Bureau In 1865, an agency set up to aid former slaves in adjusting to freedom. It furnished food and clothing to needy blacks and helped them to find jobs
Impeachment A formal document charging a public official with misconduct in office
Jim Crow Laws Laws designed to enforce segregation of blacks from whites
John Wilkes Booth An American stage actor who, as part of a conspiracy plot, assassinated Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865
Ku Klux Klan A secret organization that used terrorist tactics in an attempt to restore white supremacy in the South after the Civil War
Radical Republicans Political party that favored harsh punishment of Southern States after the Civil War
Segregation Separation of people based on racial, ethnic, or other differences
Sharecropping A system used on Southern farms after the Civil War in which farmers worked land owned by someone else in return for a small portion of the crops.
Fisk University historically black college started by the Freedmen's Bureau located in Nashville, TN
Vigilante justice taking law enforcement into one's own hands apart from duly established legal authority; justice meted out by member of a vigilante committee
