Government Terms

Power distribution, citizen participation, democracies

QuestionAnswer
Unitary a form of government in which power is held by one central authority
Federal a form of government in which power is divided equally between one central and several regional authorities
Confederation a system in which power is shared by a loose relationship of local political units
Autocratic government in which one person possesses unlimited power and the citizen has little, if any, role in the government
Oligarchic government by the few; control by a small group based on royalty, wealth, family, or military influence. The citizen has a very limited role.
Democratic government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections
Presidential democracy a system of government in which the executive branch exists separately from the legislature
Parliamentary democracy a government in which members of an executive branch are nominated to their positions by the legislative branch so there is overlap of the branches
Confederation independent states/units voluntarily work together for some common purpose
Unitary a form of government in which local level governments, if they exist at all, do nothing but implement national policies
Presidential democracy a form of government in which there is separation of powers among the branches
Confederation a form of government in which the vast majority of power rests with local governments
Parliamentary democracy a form of government in which the prime minister is the head of the government and another position is head of state
