| generalization other | integrated conception of norms, values, and beliefs of one's community |
| hidden curriculum | the informal and unofficial aspects of culture that children are taught in school |
| imitation | mimick behavior without understanding |
| looking-glass self | a perception of yourself based on other observations |
| mass media | a communication tool intended for the entire population |
| peer group | individuals similar in age and interest |
| play stage | acting in ways the self perceives how others would |
| resocialization | process of embedding new norms, attitudes, values, and behaviors |
| role taking | assuming the viewpoint of another and using it to shape the self-concept |
| self-concept | knowing you have an identity separate from other people |
| significant others | the people whose judgement are most important to our self-concept |
| socialization | the process of learning how to participate in a group |
| total institutions | places where individuals are separate from the general society |
