| source | the beginning of a stream or river |
| meander | the slow moving, winding course of a river |
| tributaries | rivers and streams that feed the main river |
| oxbow | a lake formed in the old channel of a river |
| runoff | rain that flows or drains from the land into a body of water |
| mouth | the end of a river |
| delta | deposits of sediment at the mouth of a river |
| sediment | solid material moved and deposited by a river |
| estuary | the part of a river that meets the sea; where fresh water and salt water mix |
| brackish | a combination of fresh and salt water found in an estuary |
| erosion | a process by which the surface of the earth is worn away |
| equator | an imaginary circle that divides the earth equally |
| levee | an embankment designed to prevent the flooding of a river |
| dam | a barrier to obstruct the flow of water |
| irrigation | a method of farming that uses water diverted from rivers or lakes. |
| canal | a man-made river |
