Industrial Revolution vocabulary words

Agrarian This is a form of livelihood by most early Americans based on agriculture (United States shifted from an agrarian economy to an industrial economy based on manufacturing)
Albert Einstein He was a physicist who made significant contributions to the world of science and to the emergence of the United States as a world power (Manhattan Project)
Alexander Graham Bell He is known for inventing the telephone
alliance This is the joining of forces with another country or countries for political (military) reasons
American Federation of Labor This was a progressive movement organization founded in 1886 working for higher wages & job security and better working conditions for all employees
Andrew Carnegie He was a Scottish immigrant who contributed entrepreneurial skills to the growth of our nation primarily through the steel industry
Angel Island This was the immigration station off the coast of San Francisco primarily for Asian immigrants
Central Powers Germany & Austria-Hungary
Child Labor This was the use of children in factories and on farms from age four and up which was chronicled through the lens of Lewis Hines
Eighteenth Amendment This was the law prohibiting sale and production of alcohol
Ellis Island This was the immigration station off the coast of New York (New Jersey) for European immigrants
Food and Drug Administration This was one of the progressive laws that would oversee the safety of food and drug production
Henry Ford He was the creator of the assembly line for mass production of products & starting factories in particular the automobile
Hull House Chicago residence run by Jane Addams (1889) to assist poor immigrants in their acclimation to America
immigration This is the movement of people from one country to another
imperialism This was the accumulation of smaller countries and land in order to build up an empire by other large countries
Industrial Revolution This is the time period of extreme industrial build up (late 1800's and early 1900's)
isolationism This was the reluctance to become involved in alliances and wars during the early 1900's
John D. Rockefeller He was entrepreneur who contributed his skills to the growth of our nation primarily through the oil industry
labor unions These were organized groups that created better working conditions for Americans and immigrants
monopoly This is total control of a industry by one person or one family or one company
Nineteenth Amendment This was the law giving women the right to vote
Panama Canal This was a man-made waterway built to allow Americans commercial and war ships to travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific more quickly
Progressive Era This was a middle class movement that promoted the idea that society's problems could be solved by the passage of laws
Prohibition Prohibiting the sale and production of alcohol
Rough Riders This was the first United States volunteer cavalry led by Theodore Roosevelt used during the Spanish-American War
Samuel Morse He was the inventor of the telegraph (talking wire as called by the Native Americans) a form of communication using wires strung from pole to pole that was a quick and inexpensive form of communication
tenements These were large housing complexes in cities primarily for immigrants
Thomas Edison He was an inventor of many items and an entrepreneur who perfected the light bulb (Also known as the Wizard of Menlo Park)
Women's Suffrage Movement This was the movement campaigning for the equal rights of women primarily the right to vote but there were other issues
Wright Brothers These two brothers started the aircraft industry with experiments in manned flight
WWI European conflict between the Central Powers and Allied Powers
