Government

Europe Government Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Autocracy One ruler leads the country, and citizens have no rights
Oligarchy A small group of wealthy rulers lead the country, and citizens have no rights
Democracy A type of government where citizens elect leaders to lead the country
Parliamentary A type of democracy where citizens elect members to parliament, and parliament chooses the head of government. The UK is an example.
Presidential A type of democracy where the head of government or chief executive is directly elected by citizens.
Confederation Local bodies maintain power. No central government control these local bodies. An example would be the European Union.
Federation Countries that have local bodies (usually states, provinces or territories) and allow the states to make some government decisions, but also have a central government. Examples would be Russia, Germany, and Canada.
Unitary Countries that do not have local bodies (states or counties or provinces) where the central government makes all government decisions. Examples would be United Kingdom and Cuba.
Prime Minister The head of government in the UK and Canada.
Queen The head of state in the UK and Canada
Chancellor The head of government in Germany
President The head of government in Russia
Parliament The legislative branch of government in a parliamentary democracy.
European Union A confederation of nations in Europe that use the Euro, have free trade, and work to solve common problems.
