ATTORNEY GENERAL the primary legal officer for the state
BICAMERAL describes a legislative body made up of two bodies or houses
BILL a proposed law
BUDGET a plan for receiving and spending money
CENSUS an official count of the population conducted every ten years
CHECKS AND BALANCES a system whereby each branch of government can use its powers to keep the other branches from misusing their powers
CIVIL LAW laws that deal with the relationships between and among individuals
CONSTITUENT the people represented by an elected official
CONSTITUTION a document that explains the broad purpose of a government, describes its organization, and states its powers
CRIMINAL LAWS the laws intended to protect a society from the wrongdoing of an individual
EXECUTIVE BRANCH the branch of government responsible for implementing the laws passed by the legislative branch, for operating the state government, and for overseeing state services
FEDERALISM a system of government where the national and state governments share powers
GOVERNMENT an organization in society with the authority to make, carryout, and enforce laws
GOVERNER the chief executive officer of the state; head of the executive branch
HOME RULE the power of political subdivisions to govern themselves; local self-government
JUDICIAL BRANCH that branch of government that interprets and applies the constitution and laws of the state; consists of the courts
JURY a group of citizens chosen to hear evidence on a legal case and to make a decision based on the evidence presented
LEGISLATIVE BRANCH the branch of government that is the law making body
LIEUTENANT GOVERNER the official in the executive branch second in command to the governor; oversees the state department of culture, re
LOBBYING the process of trying to influence a legislator about a proposed law
MUNICIPALITY city or town
OPEN PRIMARY an election in which all candidates compete for a position regardless of political party
PARISH political subdivision within the state of Louisiana
POLICE JURY the form of government used in most of Louisiana's parishes; has five to 10 members elected
REAPPORTIONMENT the process of revising the boundaries of legislative districts in order to achieve relatively equal populations
TAXES amounts charged to citizens by their governments (federal state and local) to pay for services provided
VETO to refuse to approve legislation
